What is Stress?
According to the online Miriam Webster Dictionary it is:
“something that causes strong feelings of worry or anxiety”
Recent research indicates that stress is the basic cause of more than 60% of all human illness and disease. Every week, over 100 million North Americans suffer from some kind of stress related symptoms for which they take medication.
There are 3 main types of stress:
- Physical – overexercise, environmental toxins, eating food to which you are sensitive, illness
- Mental/Emotional – relationships, negative self talk, sensitivity to too much sensory input (cell phones, traffic jams)
- Spiritual – questioning life purpose, not following your principals or ethics
Because we are integrated Beings, all 3 types of stress are interconnected.
In a world full of struggles and stressors, what is the cause of stress?
In a word YOU! As hard as it is to accept, most of our mental, emotional and spiritual stress is self induced. It is our reaction to stress that causes our inner turmoil.
Whether the source of stress is family, work, financial or health related, we react to the stress. The level of intensity and impact of our reaction is directly related to our overall health. We can improve our ability to handle stress in many ways:
- proper sleep
- healthy diet
- positive thinking
- stress management techniques like Meditation
